Sample guide

Free sample packs

Free samples are everywhere, but not all of them are free to use in a release. Here is what to check in the license, where to look, and a free drum kit to start with.

What to check before you use a free pack

  • The license. Is it royalty-free, Creative Commons or “personal use only”? Commercial releases need a license that allows them.
  • Credit. Some licenses (such as CC BY) require you to credit the author.
  • Resale. Almost every license forbids selling or giving away the samples as samples, even if you edited them.
  • Origin. Avoid packs of leaked or ripped sounds: the legal risk is yours.
  • Loops. Loops are the riskiest: widely used loops can cause claims on streaming platforms.

Where to look

  • Freesound is a large library of sounds, each with a Creative Commons license shown on its page.
  • Producers and labels hand out free packs and demo kits to introduce their paid ones; the license is usually stated on the page or in a text file in the archive.
  • Our own demo kit is free: demo drums, demo Serum presets and FLPs, about 5% of the full kits.

How to organise free samples

  1. One folder per packKeep the license text with it, so you can check it later.
  2. Add the folder to your DAWIn FL Studio that is a one-time step; see how to use drum kits in FL Studio.
  3. Rename or tag the keepersA few minutes of tidying saves hours later.

Questions

What does royalty-free mean?

You can use the sounds in your own music without paying royalties for each use. It does not mean you may resell or share the samples themselves; read the license.

Can I sell beats made with free samples?

Usually yes, if the license allows commercial use of music made with them. Check each pack. Selling the samples as samples is almost never allowed.

Are loops safe to use?

A loop that thousands of producers use can trigger copyright claims on streaming platforms if someone registers it. Prefer sounds you edit and combine yourself, and read the license.

Where can I get a free drum kit?

Our free Demo Multikit has demo drums, demo Serum presets and FLPs, free for subscribers of our Telegram channel.

How should I organise my samples?

Keep one folder per pack, with the license text next to it, and add the folder to your DAW's browser so the samples show up in the library.
